True North

Setting your compass for life's journey.

Outline

For the ancient mariner, the value of a guiding star was beyond measure. lts position and height could be calculated, but its true worth in leading the way home was priceless for those far out at sea. For most of us, a distant star has no meaning for our life's journey, but, just like the ancient explorer, we do need to set ourselves guidelines if we are to safely navigate through life and reach our true potential.

True directions.  It's impossible to move our lives forward unless we know which way "forward" is. Of course events will have an impact on the path we take, but it is not just the wind that determines the direction a boat travels; it also depends on how we set the sails and how we manage each wave.

True friendships.  It's very easy to get caught up with the crowd and allow its momentum to drag us in whatever direction it's going. Friendships are important, so we need to surround ourselves with people who will support, inspire and encourage us to be the best we can be. True friends can be like navigation beacons that light the way ahead and help keep us away from danger.

True values.  The essence of who we are, and ultimately what we will achieve, is closely related to the principles and ideals that we use to determine our actions. Setting our own standards and holding firmly to them takes strength of character but also gives us a solid point of reference to orientate our lives by.

True goals.  Setting goals helps to give our life purpose and realising them a sense of achievement. We may not always reach our goals, but this is no reason for despair. Life is a process. It's about the direction of travel, and the joys this travel entails. lt's not necessarily just what we achieve by reaching our goals that matters, but what we become by striving for them.

So, what do we take our bearings from?  Do we set ourselves guiding principals to live by or do we let our course be constantly buffeted by whatever passing fad or friendship comes our way?  No one knows exactly what pathway our lives will follow, but to really achieve our goals, to reach our maximum potential, to live a full and rewarding life, we need to establish and hold on to our own set of values, our own True North
